Annuit Cœptis (Latin) - Undertakings in
Freedom
"Providence (God) has approved (blessed) our
undertakings"
Annuit Cœptis (Latin) - "Providence (God)
has approved (blessed) our undertakings" (English)
Motto on the reverse of the
Great Seal of the United States and on the
back of the
U.S. one dollar bill. "He" refers to
God, and so the official translation given
by the U.S. State Department is "He [God] has
favored our undertakings".
Documents of Freedom
Most people, when they look at the US
Constitution, Declaration of Independence or
other founding document of our Country, don't
understand that there were previous incarnations
and numerous variations of these documents that
were used as a model. Most individual
States already had incorporated their own
versions of these documents into their
existence.
Much of what we have in the final National
(Continental) version was a "consensus" that was
distilled from these original documents that was
acceptable to all States at the time. From
these founding documents, we can discern the
original meaning, founding intent and the
concessions or modifications that were required
in the language of the final document to reach a
consensus worthy of approval of all of the
people.
Not everyone was happy with all of what
was finally distilled. It is safe to say
however that what survived the Continental
Congress and was presented in Philadelphia for
ratification of the people was the finest
principles of Liberty, Freedom and Democracy
found within each of these documents.
